Window Installation

Double-hung windows for flexible room-by-room ventilation

A double-hung window lets the lower sash move up and the upper sash move down. It keeps the familiar proportions of a traditional window while giving a room more control over where fresh air enters and leaves.

How it works

What makes a double-hung window different

Unlike a single-hung unit, a double-hung window has two operating sashes. You can open the bottom in the usual way, lower the top, or use both openings at once. That flexibility is useful when furniture, privacy or the way a room is occupied changes how you want to ventilate it.

Many current designs allow the sashes to tilt toward the room for cleaning, but hardware and cleaning features vary by product line. Midstate measures the complete opening and reviews the actual unit being ordered rather than assuming every double-hung window works the same way.

Midstate handles complete window installation: measuring the real opening, ordering the full unit, removing the old window, setting and sealing the replacement, and completing the related finish work. The company does not provide glass-only, sash, balance or hardware repair.

Purpose

Why homeowners choose double-hung windows

Ventilation at two heights
Opening the upper or lower sash gives you more control than a window with one movable section.
Traditional proportions
The horizontal meeting rail suits the tall openings found on many ranch, bungalow and two-story homes.
No outward swing
Both sashes stay within the frame, so the window does not project into a walkway, planting bed or screen enclosure.
Whole-home consistency
It can repeat across bedrooms and living areas without changing the exterior rhythm of the house.

Likely locations

Where this style usually makes sense

These are common residential placements, not a substitute for measuring the wall, checking exterior clearance and seeing how the room is actually used.

Bedrooms
A common fit for tall bedroom openings where controllable ventilation matters and exterior clearance is limited.
Second-floor rooms
An inward-cleaning design may make the exterior glass easier to reach, depending on the selected unit.
Living and dining rooms
Works where a traditional sash profile belongs and a fixed picture window would remove ventilation.
Front elevations
Repeated double-hung units create an orderly, familiar look from the street.

Before ordering

Details to review at the opening

Sash clearances
Blinds, furniture and interior trim should leave room for the sash, locks and any tilt-in cleaning movement.
Opening proportions
Double-hung windows usually read best in openings that are taller than they are wide.
Screen arrangement
Confirm whether the screen is full-height or positioned for the expected operating pattern.
Existing finish work
Stucco, siding, interior casing and sill conditions all affect how the replacement is measured and finished.

Product features, available sizes, glass packages and performance ratings vary by manufacturer and exact unit. Those specifics should be confirmed for the window quoted for your home. See Midstate's window brands and custom options.
