Five signs it may be time to replace a window
Common signs that it may be time to replace an old unit with a complete new window.

Most people put up with a difficult window for years before considering replacement. Some isolated problems may be repairable by a repair specialist, but Midstate does not provide window repairs, adjustments, glass-only replacement or maintenance. Our estimate visits are for complete window installation.
These are five common signs homeowners notice when deciding whether it is time to replace the complete window.
1. It takes two hands, or a shoulder
A sash that needs real force may mean the frame is no longer square or that operating parts have worn out. Midstate does not diagnose or repair those parts. When the complete unit has reached the end of its useful life, replacement puts a new frame, sash, glass and operating system into the opening together.
Open it slowly and watch the gap along the side jamb. If that gap widens or narrows as the sash travels, the frame may no longer be square and complete replacement may be worth considering.

2. The glass has gone cloudy
Haze, streaking or visible moisture sitting between the two panes means the seal around the edge of the insulated unit has failed. Air and humidity are now moving in and out of a space that was meant to be closed.
The deposit cannot be cleaned from the room side because it sits between the panes. If the complete window is ready for replacement, Midstate can quote a new window installation.

3. You can feel air at the frame on a windy day
Run the back of your hand around the perimeter of a closed window on a blustery afternoon. If you can feel movement, work out where it is coming from before you decide anything.
- Air at the outside edge, where the frame meets the wall, may be a perimeter-seal issue for a repair or maintenance provider to assess.
- Air between the sash and frame may involve weatherstripping or another service item that Midstate does not repair.
- Air through the frame or at an opened corner joint can be a sign that complete window replacement is worth considering.
4. One room is always warmer than the rest
Single-pane glass in a thin aluminium frame lets a great deal more afternoon heat through than a modern insulated unit does. In a Florida house it tends to show up in whichever room takes the west sun — often a back bedroom or an office that nobody wants to sit in after two o'clock.
We will not quote you a percentage. How much difference new glass makes depends on the orientation of the wall, what is shading it, the size of the opening and the specification you choose. Anyone giving you a firm number without seeing the house is guessing.
5. The window no longer matches the house
This is the one people apologise for raising, and there is no need. Bronze frames, mismatched replacements from three different decades, and sashes that have yellowed at different rates all read from the street. If the rest of the house has been kept up, the windows are usually the thing dating it.
When replacement may not be the right call
If the frame is sound and square, the glass is clear, and the only issue is a serviceable part, a repair specialist may recommend a smaller fix. Midstate does not offer that repair work and will not turn a repair call into an installation pitch.
If you are considering complete replacement, Midstate can measure the opening, discuss new-unit options and provide a written installation price.
