A useful quote tells you which products you are buying and what it takes to leave the opening finished. Two totals are only comparable when the products, installation work and responsibilities are clear. Start with the openings you want to replace and ask each company to price that same scope.

Start with the exact product and configuration

Ask for the manufacturer and product line, operating style, frame finish, glass package, grille pattern and screen arrangement. A brand name by itself does not identify the unit. For a sliding glass door, also compare panel count, which panels move, the clear walking opening and the threshold. Confirm that the quoted configuration is available for your measurements.

Compare everything around the window or door

• Removal and disposal of the old units.
• Required permits and inspections, including who coordinates them.
• Opening preparation, fitting, insulation and sealing.
• Interior trim and exterior stucco repairs associated with installation.
• Painting of the affected installation finishes.
• Operation checks, cleanup and the handover of product documents.

Ask about three stages: ordering, permit review and the installation itself. A description of the crew’s time on site does not tell you how long product ordering or permitting will take. Weather, access, the number of openings and finish work also matter. Agree on a project-specific schedule rather than relying on a universal one-day promise.

Read two kinds of warranty

Manufacturer coverage and workmanship coverage answer different questions. The product warranty describes covered product issues; workmanship coverage concerns the installation. Review the actual documents for the selected products and project. Ask about duration, exclusions, transferability, labor or service charges, and the contact for a claim. A lifetime label alone does not explain all those terms.
