Can replacement windows make your Central Florida home quieter?
Traffic, lawn equipment or barking dogs? Learn how window sound ratings, glass choices and installation affect noise in your Central Florida home.

The morning traffic starts before your alarm. A lawn crew arrives during a work call. The bedroom facing the street never feels as restful as the room at the back of the house. If outside noise is part of daily life in your Central Florida home, it is worth discussing when you plan replacement windows.
Replacement windows can help reduce outside sound, but the result depends on the product, installation and the rest of the room. Pella’s homeowner guidance explains that even windows described as soundproof cannot block every noise. Start with a specific goal, such as making a home office less distracting, then compare options suited to that room.
Start with a room and a sound
Before your estimate, make a short noise diary. You do not need special equipment. A few observations can give the conversation more direction than asking for the quietest window available.
- Name the room and the activity being interrupted: sleep, conversation, television or work calls.
- Describe the sound: a steady road hum, passing trucks, voices, barking or lawn equipment.
- Note when it happens and which side of the house faces it.
- Record whether windows and nearby exterior doors were fully closed, and whether a sash or lock is difficult to operate.
For a home in Lake Mary, Sanford or Longwood, your priority might be one street-facing bedroom rather than every opening. Mark that room on your window list and explain what you want to improve. Your observations help set priorities; they do not establish an acoustic rating for your existing windows.
STC and OITC: two sound ratings worth asking about
Pella’s architectural guidance describes two ratings used to compare sound performance. A higher number generally indicates greater sound reduction within the same rating system.
Scroll sideways to see all columns.
| Rating | What it emphasizes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| STC: Sound Transmission Class | Sound isolation across a tested frequency range, with an emphasis on sounds such as speech. | Compare STC with STC for the proposed window assemblies. |
| OITC: Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class | Exterior sounds, including lower-frequency traffic and equipment noise. | Ask for OITC when road noise or a low rumble is a main concern. |
Compare matching ratings. An STC number and an OITC number are not interchangeable. Ask which operating style, glass package and tested size the documentation covers, and how it applies to your quote.
A sound rating is a comparison tool, not a promise about your bedroom. An STC rating of 30 does not guarantee that every outdoor sound will be 30 decibels quieter inside your home.
Look beyond the number of glass panes
The glass arrangement matters as well as the pane count. Pella’s professional guidance discusses glass thickness, differences between pane thicknesses and the spaces between panes as parts of sound-control design. Ask what changes in the proposed upgrade and whether the complete window’s published rating improves.
Laminated glass is another option to discuss. PGT explains that it bonds two pieces of glass with an interlayer. Laminated insulating glass combines a laminated section with another pane and an insulating space. These descriptions identify how glass is built; the sound data for the selected assembly tells you more about its acoustic performance.
Keep your other preferences in the same conversation. You may still want a clear view of the yard, a particular frame color and a window that is comfortable to open. Ask the estimator to explain the available choices for your openings before deciding which upgrade deserves your budget.
Do impact windows also reduce noise?
They can. PGT describes reduced everyday outdoor noise as a benefit of its WinGuard impact-resistant windows and doors, while explicitly saying they are not soundproof. That is a useful expectation to carry into an estimate: improved comfort with some outside sounds still audible.
Treat sound performance and storm protection as separate items to verify. An impact designation does not tell you the OITC rating. Ask for acoustic information alongside the product approvals needed for your project, and confirm which options are available for the actual units being quoted.
Check the installation and the rest of the room
Pella identifies weatherstripping and proper installation as important parts of noise reduction. The glass cannot do the whole job if sound has an easy path around the window. Discuss how the replacement frame will be installed and sealed, and operate each new sash and lock during the final walkthrough.
Sound also travels through building materials and other openings. Include nearby exterior doors and the surrounding wall in the assessment. If the main problem is a persistent low rumble or noise throughout the house, ask whether an acoustical professional should evaluate the room before you commit to a window-only solution.
Make the estimate specific to your noise concern
Imagine you are planning a home office in a front bedroom. A useful request would be: “Please compare the standard glass package with an available sound-control option for these openings, and explain what else in this room could limit the result.” This gives the estimator a clear task and gives you something concrete to compare.
- Which exact window series, operating style and glass configuration are included?
- What STC and OITC documentation is available for that configuration?
- What changes between the standard option and the proposed sound-control upgrade?
- What installation and finish work is included in each price?
- What limitations should I expect given the noise source and the rest of this room?
